11 DIY Carpet Cleaners You Already Have in Your Kitchen

Some stains can be easily cleaned without making an appointment with a carpet cleaning service. A lot of the times you can find the cleaning solutions you need by just taking a trip to your kitchen. Simple Household items can take out all kinds of tough stains, everything from red wine to pet urine.

Paint Remover:
Paint remover is great for removing nail polish stains, ink from ink pens, or paint in general. Just spray the stain directly with the paint remover and dab lightly until the stain is completely lifted.

Dry Cleaning Fluid:
This method is great for lifting lipstick stains, grease, butter, and oily fingerprints. Pour a small amount of fluid onto a cleaning cloth and blot lightly and work the fluid int the stain starting at the outer edges and moving to the center.

Ice Cubes:
Ice cubes are an incredible way to remove chewing gum from carpets and other fabric surfaces. When chewing gum ends up stuck to the fibers in your carpet, you can freeze the gum and remove it by using Ice cubes. Place ice cubes in a plastic bag and leave them on top of the chewing gum for about 15 minutes after it has had the proper time to harden the gum you can scrape the gum up using a butter knife.

Tooth Brushes:
To remove a deep stain a great tool to use that is also gentle on your carpet is a soft-bristled nylon tooth brush. This allows you to get deep into the stain while not damaging the fibers of your carpet any further. Use the toothbrush to blot a cleaning agent such as vinegar into the stain until it is lifted completely.

Baby Wipes:
Baby Wipes make great homemade carpet cleaners and can be used on a variety of cloth surfaces. Simply take a baby wipe and blot the stain as it absorbs both the liquid and the stain at the same time. You can also use baby wipes for stains on clothes and upholstery.

Club Soda:
For pet urine and other hard stains you can use club soda as an additive to lift them from your carpet fibers. Club soda is also great for removing spilled coffee and tea from carpets. Simply blot the stain to remove the excess liquid, then pour the club soda over the stain and continue to blot. Once this is complete, add diluted carpet cleaner to the stain to lift the rest.

Meat Tenderizer:
To lift blood from a carpet you can use equal parts of meat tenderizer and water. Use this solution to create a paste and apply it to the stain. Allow it to sit for 30 minutes before sponging off with cold water.

Baking Soda:
Everyone always keeps a box of baking soda in their home as it can be used for a variety of projects. In this case, you can use it for stain removal. It is great for removing vomit, pet stains, and blood stains from carpet fibers. Baking soda is great for sanitizing, deodorizing, and cleaning just about any stain. Do what you can to blot up any liquid from the original stain, then pour the baking soda over the stained area, then gently pat with a paper towel. Allow the homemade mixture to completely dry before vacuuming up the remainder of the residue. You can also use this mixture to lift grease stains from your carpet by using a 50/50 mixture of baking soda and salt. Sprinkle this mixture over the stained area and use a stiff brush to work the powder into the stain. Allow the stain to absorb into the mixture for 4 to 5 hours then vacuum the rest of the powder up to move the stain from the carpet completely. Baking soda is definitely one of the most effective carpet cleaning materials for a DIY project plus the usage of it is relatively safe.

Hydrogen Peroxide:
If you have a mystery stain that you are not exactly sure what it is, you can use hydrogen peroxide and cream of tartar to remove most stains. To remove the stain, you can just mix a teaspoon of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide with a little cream of tartar or slightly dab a small amount of non-gel tooth paste into the stain. Use a soft cleaning cloth to rub the paste into the stain, then rinse and he stain should be gone.

WD-40
You can use WD-40 to remove stains such as ink by spraying a little WD-40 on the stained area of your carpet. Spray the effected area with a little WD-40 then wait a few minutes then continue to clean the spot with your regular carpet cleaner or gently clean the rest of the spot with a sponge and warm water.

Borax:
Dampen the stained area then gently rub in borax to help lift the stain from the affected area. Let the stained area dry completely then vacuum, or blot with a solution of vinegar and soapy water. Always remember to try any homemade solution on a unnoticeable corner of the carpet incase it may cause bleaching or discoloration.
